About the Teacher
Recognized worldwide, Manorama teaches Sanskrit and Yoga philosophy. She evokes healing through the universal arts of language and conscious living. “Happiness,” she often says, “is the free flow of energy, and communication is energy. When we use our voices authentically and confidently, we create harmony between ourselves and others.”
Manorama offers a direct, accessible and joyful approach to Sanskrit, encouraging her students to focus on its dynamic sound qualities and architectural beauty rather than simply memorizing grammar. Manorama offers Sanskrit programs for yoga teacher trainings, as well as open workshops and retreats. She tours the globe training students in Luminous Shabda, a path that fuses sacred teachings with everyday life through Sanskrit, Mantra, Meditation, and Yoga philosophy. Combining her earthly charm with a healthy dose of humour, Manorama guides students in bridging the ordinary with the spiritually sublime.
Yoga teachers and students alike treasure Manorama’s recordings on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, Learn to Chant Yoga Invocations and Learn to Pronounce Yoga Poses. Celebrated for her haunting melodies in chanting, Manorama is featured on numerous albums, including Invocation (with Krishna Das and Ty Burhoe) and Wade Morisette’s, Maha Moha: The Great Delusion.
Manorama earned a B.A. in Film at Columbia University, where she also studied linguistics.

Jessica grew up in magical Santa Fe, New Mexico. With the beat of punk rock in her heart and Brahms in her ballet slippers, she moved to New York in 1998 and studied philosophy and art in college--dreams of the gritty Bowery and glittery Lincoln Center dancing in her head. Jessica stumbled into her first yoga class at Jivamukti Union Square attracted to the physical forms and challenge of yoga asana, fascinated by contemplating philosophy while physically upside-down--and the great music! After sleepwalking through several years of disconnection, yoga sparked the vital connection she was missing. The practices, physical and metaphysical, are capable of producing profound internal and external transformation. There are no coincidences, Jessica was later delighted to find out that she was in a lineage of radical artists, musicians, activists, dancers: David Life and Sharon Gannon! All expectations were blown away when she discovered that yoga is not for the faint of heart. The most countercultural, radical, and important thing you can do to dismantle the present culture is to discover who you truly are and to be present in love. Compassion is radical action!
Jessica completed 800+ hours teaching certification through Jivamukti Teacher Training program and received advanced certification in January 2010. She would like to thank all of her holy teachers, especially Sharon, David, Ganeshdas, Narayani, and Satyavira for inspiring, teaching, and seeing more in her than she sometimes saw in herself! Classes integrate anatomical and intellectual precision with choreographic sequencing and fun playlists! Cultivating mindfulness, grace, compassion, wisdom, and FUN through these ancient techniques.
In addition to teaching at Jivamukti, Jessica has the privilege to teach yoga and meditation to young adults in underserved communities through The Lineage Project. She also works as a volunteer at the beautiful and magical Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.
