ardha padasana Maile

Program Details

Our mornings will begin with a meditation and gently transform into an active vinyasa practice.  Maile teaches alignment-based, medium-paced vinyasa, based on the tradition of the Ashtanga lineage.  Classes revolve around a theme and we build the practices and deepen them throughout the week.  The days are free to swim, sun, surf, or nap to the sound of the waves.  Excursions include whale watching, horseback riding and hiking in the surrounding jungle. Evenings we will reconvene to practice slowly as the sun sets into the ocean.  The afternoon practice is a fusion of restorative, yin, meditation and chanting.

On recent trip to the Indian Himalaya, a wise Buddhist man told me: -Westerners all have watches, but none of them seem to have time-. Since returning, I have pondered this familiar truth about our busy lifestyles and achievement oriented culture.  Luckily, we have our yoga practice to ground us and bring us back into contact with the spirit that resides inside when we are quiet and connected.  This week of retreat is a deep recharge; a reconnection and recommitment to our natural state of being.  Our time in this seaside paradise will deepen our yoga practices, exalt our sangha/community, and renew the soulfulness in our lives.

About the Teacher

Maile discovered yoga in 1996.  She immediately resonated with the practice and could feel there was something special, something indefinable to it. Her primary teacher is Richard Freeman.  She studies with him annually and has completed three teacher trainings with him.

Rooted in the tradition of Ashtanga, Maile-s practice is inspired by the connection between breath and movement and teaches precision in alignment. Balancing tradition with creativity, her classes are an active, yet nurturing synthesis of flowing postures, breath awareness and yogic philosophy.

When not practicing yoga, she can be found hiking with her dog or trying to talk herself into surfing in the frigid Northern California ocean.  She can’t wait to be in the warm waters of Mexico!
