a yoga + nutrition + wellness + movement + clean living + alchemy retreat
with Jaime Scates Schmitz
Join Jaime Scates Schmitz owner of Freedom Seeker Yoga and one of Seattle’s most well known and experienced yoga teachers and Megan Filippini a University of California Berkeley trained San Francisco Bay Area Integrative Nutrition Consultant for a mind/body freedom seeking week of yoga, nutrition, wellness, cleansing, beach workouts and meditation.
What is a True Freedom Retreat?
A results inspired week-long retreat in which Megan works closely with the Xinalani kitchen to create a curated menu incorporating raw, organic, local foods to move the body into an anti-inflammatory healing state and high metabolic burn rate. To amplify results and further cleanse the body, Megan will incorporate an optional one day “juice cleanse:” a tried and true method employed to purify the body and shed unwanted weight and bloating. If that feels too extreme, stick with Xinalani’s amazing food, but maybe give it a try? Jaime and Megan are huge believers in the benefits of intermittent fasting for weight management and as a spiritual practice.
How does true freedom happen?
As this retreat is results driven, in addition to nutrition we will be moving . . . A LOT! The backbone of the movement program is Jaime’s vigorous and restorative yoga set to incredible music playlists to renew, revive, release and restore us.
We’ll be incorporating beach P/E/S workouts (power/endurance/strength) and hikes into our days. The high intensity interval training on the beach will spike metabolism to amplify results and the long hikes will move us into our fat-burning zones. The P/E/S beach work outs will be taught by power-athlete and Seattleite, Alli Frank. Alli recognizes that what is most people’s least favorite part of mind/body health is Alli’s favorite. A cornerstone to aging healthfully, Alli turns the beach into the optimal place to run, hop, leap and breathe hard in workouts inspired by nature and fellow retreat members sweating and cheering along side one another (from Jaime: Trust me, other than yoga and trail runs, I sincerely hate to work out and I refuse to lift heavy things: when we were in Nicaragua together, I was very resistant to the “workouts” and initially attended only because Alli is my friend, but Alli made it so fun; it felt like a big recess/beach party, I LOVED my beach “work-outs” with Alli so much and I believe that they amplified my personal results-a 6 lb weight loss in one week-that I felt it was essential to have her on this retreat!).
As an experienced meditator, Jaime thinks it’s impossible to cleanse the body without cleansing the mind. She will work with the group on NLP and meditation techniques to reprogram the way we think about movement, food and our bodies.
Throughout the week, Megan will be incorporating casual nutrition talks into our dinner conversations and individual nutrition consultation meetings so you can carry your results back to the “real world”. The individual meetings can cover anything from cooking, to food triggers to meal planning to concerns about food intolerances.
How is true freedom designed so I am successful?
We want you to end the week energized, rested, and able to have participated in all the activities that your heart desires while remaining injury free and vibrant. What’s most important to us is that you carry the results forward so that you don’t go home and simply fall back into old habits. While we will have one powerful and transformative week together, we all know that it takes 3 weeks to make or break a habit: Megan will send you home with two weeks of support, meal-planning tips and remain readily available via email to guide you through those crucial 2-weeks. For Seattleites, Jaime will help you carry the momentum forward by including 2 weeks of unlimited yoga at Freedom Seeker post-retreat as well as offering 2 Meditation/NLP classes for retreat goers during those two weeks.

You may be thinking, “Well this sounds great, but what about my vacation?” You will have plenty of time for luxurious spa treatments, swims in the ocean, reading in your palapa and lounging on the beach. While we encourage you to participate as much as possible for maximum results, we also support your need to skip out on a yoga practice or a workout to prioritize self-nurturance! You may also be wondering about coffee and alcohol. We invite you to enjoy your favorite beverages; Megan will talk to you about modifications you can make that will help you maximize your results (i.e. eliminating inflammatory dairy and creaming your coffee with cashew or almond milk and swapping out sugar-dense and calorie laden wine with Xinalani’s specialty: the skinny girl margarita).

About the Teacher
Jaime Scates Schmitz
I am committed to unearthing expressions of internal and external freedom for myself and my primary goal as a teacher is to provide my students with glimpses of and forays into expressions of freedom. Whether it be through travel, meditation, nidra, music, breath, fluidity, athleticism, handstands or exploring nature, I love to invite people out of the confines in which they limit themselves to sustain the illusion of control. Primarily I work with the element of fire, to create alchemy, as whatever we throw into the fire is transformed.
While my teaching style is creative, athletic, fluid and dynamic, I’m committed to honoring my roots and providing a traditional yoga experience. Elements of Ashtanga and Baptiste continue to guide every sequence I build. My classes are very challenging and certainly a physical practice, yet I guide my students past the physical and invite them to delve into the subtle and energetic bodies.
Currently, my personal practices are more focused in the realm of spirit and meditation. As I quest for Internal espressions of freedom, I find sharing this type of work brings me the greatest pleasure. I study with my guru/primary teacher, Anita Lucia Briggs and I love to bring the work that I do with this enlightened teacher into the studio and share this journey into spirit, the ultimate expression of freedom.
When I sold my old studio in January of 2015, I knew that I wanted to continue to be a creative part of the yoga community without being a studio owner.
I soft-opened Freedom Seeker Yoga in October of 2015. FSY has reminded me of what yoga was like 10+ years ago when I practiced in the back of my teacher’s home. In the last decade, I’ve watched yoga explode. While I love the expansive breadth and width of this explosion (and was certainly a part of it), I recognize that something has been lost since my early days of learning and teaching.
Once upon a time in Seattle, yoga teaching was relegated to highly specialized and committed group of teachers who had experience far beyond than their 200 hour RYT. Freedom Seeker Yoga has been created to reclaim a bit of that old school level of refinement.
Having owned and operated two successful commercial Seattle based studios, sold-out retreats locally and abroad, presented at the Sun Valley Wellness Festival, been invited to teach on international trips with Escape to Shape and run two successful 200 Hour RYT Teacher Trainings, Jaime has been described as “a founder, a leader, an innovator and an early adopter” in the Seattle Yoga Community.
